Facts About Spaying and Neutering

Spaying/neutering your pet at an early age can prevent many diseases later in life as well as decreasing the number of unwanted pets. Unwanted animals are a serious economic concern costing taxpayers millions of dollars each year. Only a small portion of these animals are lucky enough to be adopted. Stray animals can easily become a public nuisance as well as a health hazard, potentially spreading rabies and other diseases. One intact female cat and her litters will produce over 120,000 cats in only 7 years.

Reasons to spay or neuter you pet :

Males:

Decreases the desire to roam.
Decreases fighting among other dogs and the resulting injuries.
Decreases aggression - becoming a more affectionate pet.
If your pet is neutered in his first year, the risk of prostate cancer later in life is greatly reduced.

Females:

Eliminates the chance of cystic ovaries and uterine infections later in life.
Decreases chances of developing breast cancer later in life.
Decreases the number of unwanted puppies and kittens.
Prevents signs and behaviors of estrus ("heat").
Prevents blood stains on carpet and furniture from the "heat" cycle.
Prevents breast development if done before breeding age.
If your pet is going to be used for breeding she should be spayed as early as possible and no later than 6-7 years of age to prevent the risk of infections.
